Out and about
Nestled within the idyllic Hertfordshire countryside
Savour moments of peaceful village living amidst the rolling green Hertfordshire landscape. From the disused airfi eld close to Ellison Park pilots flew to support Lancaster Bombers in the Dambusters Raid. Today, the area offers more peaceful activities for the whole family.
For those who want to get close to nature there’s Thorley Wash, near Bishop’s Stortford, a 42 acre Site of Special Scientific Interest noted for its flora and fauna. The Ventura Wildlife Park, six miles to the west, is an interactive nature park with a wide range of exotic species. While the River Lee Country Park, a wonderful 1,000 acre natural playground, offers wildlife, sailing, white water rafting as well as wonderful walks and more. If you like a dash of culture with your fresh air, you’ll appreciate the Henry Moore Foundation, with its impressive sculptures laid out amid beautiful grounds.
Naturally, there are also miles of cycle runs through chocolate box villages and along quiet B roads. In fact the well-known London to Cambridge bike ride goes through the village once a year. Other sports are equally well catered for with cricket, football, hockey and rugby clubs all in the vicinity, while the golf clubs of Hanbury Manor and Bishop’s Stortford challenge every standard of player.
All you need on your doorstep
The pretty village centre of Hunsdon boasts two pubs – The Crown and The Fox & Hounds. The latter, just a minute’s walk from Ellison Park, is the only establishment in Hertfordshire to be awarded a Michelin BIB Gourmand for excellent quality, good value cooking. You’ll also find a village shop for all essentials, together with a post office and a handy petrol station.
A little further afield you’ll find retail therapy aplenty in the larger centres of Ware and Bishop’s Stortford, both within a 15 minute drive. Typical market towns, they are buzzing with life, offering intriguing independent shops, supermarkets and major chain stores.
When it comes to night life you’re never too far away from quality entertainment, like Ruby’s curry house in Hertford, or a wide variety of pubs, cafés and cosy cocktail bars. For a more intellectual evening, you can choose between the theatres in Harlow, Hertford and Bishop’s Stortford, where you’ll also find cinemas for all the usual blockbusters.
